Peter Van Eenoo is Director of the WADA accredited laboratory in Belgium. At RUSADA request he will share the progress made with samples analysis in WADA accredited laboratories around the world.
Progress has been made in the detection of anabolic steroids. This is a detection period of several weeks, months, and even years after taking even one dose.
An athlete who used these substances can be found in a much longer time, thanks to the development of new methods based on new technologies and the discovery of new long-term metabolites.
Progress relates not only to anabolic steroids, but to other groups of substances as well: beta-antagonists, diuretics, drugs and stimulants.
A couple of years ago some prohibited substances were undetectable. Now, thanks to new developments and improvements, the methods used in anti-doping laboratories to detect these compounds have become very sensitive, this allows to identify violations that occurred 10 years ago.
